Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Aimee Zaring earned an MFA in Writing from Spalding University and a BA in English and Psychology from Bellarmine University. She is the recipient of two artist enrichment grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship Award from the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, which is supported by state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Her short fiction, essays, book reviews, and interviews have appeared in numerous publications, including Adirondack Review, Arts Across Kentucky, Edible Louisville, The Courier-Journal, and The Rumpus.
Zaring is the owner of a2z English Learning Solutions LLC, specializing in customized English language instruction for individual and corporate clients. She has taught ESOL (English For Students of Other Languages) for
approximately eight years through Catholic Charities, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Jefferson Co. Public Schools, Global LT, and individual corporate clients. Being an ambassador of her city and helping immigrants gain confidence and assimilate into their new community through better communication skills is one of her driving passions.
During one of the potlucks at the schools where she taught English, Zaring got the idea to write Flavors from Home: Refugees in Kentucky Share Their Stories and Comfort Foods, after observing her students’ pride and joy in sharing dishes from their homelands and the power of food to help bridge cultural divides.
